First, ask these questions.
1) Has it been well

Tuesday Cruiseday.
A new study is out to
discover what turns people off and on when it comes to getting behind the
wheel.
https://www.stuff.co.nz/.../study-finds-bmw-drivers-are-icky
Note: Autoport.nz is
an equal opportunities car vendor who doesn't mind which car you drive!
Study finds BMW drivers are 'icky'
A new study from the UK has found that a BMW is the top brand for vehicle-related turn-offs.
Scrap Car Comparison talked to 2000 people to discover what turns them off and on when it comes to getting behind the wheel.
BMW came out as the car brand that puts people off a potential partner the most, followed by Fiats and Skodas, while Mercedes proved the biggest turn-on.
On the subject of turn-ons, someone flashing their headlights to say thank you to another road user was revealed as the behaviour that people find most attractive while out on the roads with a current or potential partner, with 15% admitting that they find it a turn-on. Although it’s recommended to raise a hand rather than flash headlights to say thanks, it just goes to show that manners can go a long way!
Being green has its perks in love too, as 11% consider electric car owners attractive, while singing while driving was a turn-on for one in ten of respondents.
On the flipside, drink-driving was the number one turn-off with 45% of people putting it above anything else. Should probably be a higher percentage, but that’s for a different day.
Next was dangerous driving (42%) followed by using their phone while driving (38%).
There are some odd parts of the results though. The survey said it's sexy to drive with a hand on the other person's lap, then it says it's also a turn-on to drive with both hands on the wheel... And driving at the speed limit is hotter than overtaking slower vehicles.
So you should be driving while slapping the passengers leg every now and again before quickly holding the wheel with both hands and overtaking slow drivers but only at the speed limit in your automatic car, because that’s apparently more attractive than a manual.

Q. Is now a good time to buy a car?
A. Probably? Lets work it out.
Are prices good
right now?
1) Car shortages means
prices are still going up.
2) There are new
Government fees coming in on 1 January 2023.
3) Inflation isn't
finished yet.
The answer is YES for
at least 12 months. The good news is our exchange rate is holding up OK against
the Japanese Yen (don't worry we manage that).
What is good value?
No extra charges!
Traditional dealers charge extra for On Road Charges, 12 months warranty (MBI),
12 months rego, 12 months WOF and $100 fuel.
We set up Autoport to
give Kiwis a "no surprises" car buying experience. That is especially
so with price. We'll let you know every single step of the way.
Can I get a good
deal on finance?
We work with finance
providers to get you the best deal. New lending rules have made finance
difficult. As the OCR goes up, so do finance rates.
NOTE: Don't put the
car on the mortgage! You're far better off with a short term loan than paying 3
x on the mortgage! Click here for more.
What about
availability?
In NZ it's limited to
what dealers buy. Autoport has hundreds of authorised suppliers in Japan and
the UK that traditional dealers don't have access to.
Our 14,000 cars are
from dealers who supply the auctions, so we avoid auction costs, and exporter
and admin fees that are usually included.
What about my
trade-in?
Car shortages in NZ
mean trade-in values for quality cars are still going up. We work with
wholesalers who give us their best price.
We don't hold
trade-ins for stock like traditional dealers. That means we pass on the best
price we can for your trade-in.
What's the
"in-between" car?
It's the car you buy
when the car you want is not available or is a year away from delivery. It's a
new consideration with car shortages happening.
We have experts
standing by to help you choose, and if it's not listed in the 12,000+ cars we
have listed, we'll get it from the auctions for you.
Why Autoport.nz?
We set up Autoport
because we like the idea of more choice, good value, hassle free car buying
(from your couch) with a safe and understandable process. We are open about the
process and providing Kiwis with a cool alternative to get the next car. We
reckon this is just good Kiwi thinking.

I like Lamborghini.
I’ve been lucky enough to have driven a
Gallardo (temperamental), a Murcielago (wants to kill you), a Huracan (great
handling) and an Aventador (so fast), but not a Urus.
I really like the look of the Urus. Must be
a buzz to drive.

BEV? HYBRID? PHEV? A Brief Explanation.
A basic understanding
(including clean car rebates).
A BEV (Battery
Electric Vehicle) must be charged to get from A to B. This can be done by
plugging in to a standard wall plug at home (although that method may take
quite a while) or with a fast-charger.
A Hybrid vehicle has
an electric motor plus a petrol or diesel engine. Fill up at a fuel station and
the petrol or diesel engine charges the battery. When there's enough charge,
the car runs off the electric motor.
A PHEV vehicle
(Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) has an electric motor plus a petrol or diesel
engine. Fill up at a fuel station. To charge the battery, plug in like an EV.
When it runs out of battery power it automatically switches to the petrol or
diesel engine.
Examples below. Prices
include All ORCs, 12 months registration, 12 months WOF, 12 months warranty
(MBI) & $100 fuel. Cars under $50k come with our 5 day money back guarantee
if not as described. Rebates must be applied for once the car is registered and
the purchase is completed. Prices may be slightly different due to exchange
rate fluctuations. Finance, insurance and trade-in services available.

https://www.driven.co.nz/news/buying-cars-from-overseas-our-picks-from-japan-the-uk-and-australia/
Buying cars from overseas: our picks from Japan, the
UK and Australia
Buying a car from
overseas has become a lot more realistic over the past few years.
As we are locked down
and away, our buying habits have turned online, from groceries to big ticket
items like cars, and while local manufacturers like Toyota, Honda and Mercedes
are promoting their online, fixed-price purchasing, the next step is to
consider buying something a little more special.
And for that, we can
look beyond the shores, as the world was really made smaller by the internet.
Companies can
facilitate these purchases, including those like Auckland-based Autoport, who
have arms in places like Japan and the UK, where they can locate, source,
import and register specific vehicles.
Of course, convenience
comes at a cost, so there’s nothing to mandate it has to be a dealer, and if
you do your research, it is possible to DIY an import. So we’ve delved into the
overseas market to see what each of us could find in our November car buying
search.
Andrew: 2017 Cadillac
CTS-V
Searching for a car in
Japan and coming out with an American one seems to be a paradox, but it shows
how useful a site like Autoport can be. Here in New Zealand, most people will
be familiar with the last-generation HSV GTS. In a way, this Cadillac CTS-V is
the American version of this car.
Under the bonnet sits
a 6.2-litre supercharged V8 “LT4” engine that pumps out an impressive
477kW/854Nm. This is sent to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic
transmission.
While the
underpinnings of these cars are quite different, I’d argue that the looks of
the American-built beast are a lot better. Like the rest of the Cadillac range,
the CTS-V was targeted towards the luxury market, so inside is a mix of
Alcantara and leather.
Autoport quotes a
figure of $119,290 landed in Auckland. Though this might seem steep for a 2017
model, it’s worth noting that a similar second-hand HSV GTS can’t be had for
anything under $150,000 these days. Given that the CTS-V is also a discontinued
model, you could probably look to make a tidy profit on this Cadillac when it
comes time to move it on; but until then, you’ve got over 470kW of supercharged
V8 goodness to enjoy!
For this exercise I
decided to find something with mainstream Kiwi appeal – but also something you
simply can’t here.
So meet the Kia XCeed.
The what? The XCeed is based on the Ceed hatchback, which is a Kia family car
for Europe/UK that’s a similar size to the Cerato. But it’s a different car to
the Cerato, so we’re already in new territory.
The XCeed is a
crossover version of the Ceed, and we love those right? It has high ground
clearance like an SUV, topped off by a fastback roofline. Think of it as Kia’s
version of the Mercedes-Benz GLA or Citroen C4.
This particular
example is only a year old with 25,000km on the clock, and the powertrain
appeals to the left-of-centre car person: a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol triple with
a five-speed manual transmission.
The advantage of a
provider like Autoport is that the $46,850 is all-inclusive, for the car
landed, prepared, full of fuel and ready to drive away from Ellerslie,
Auckland. There’s a five-day money-back guarantee for cars under $50k and 12
months mechanical breakdown cover. Estimated pickup for this one would be
January/February 2022 – but I’d be tempted to wait until April, because this
1.0-litre SUV will definitely be in line for a Government Clean Car rebate.
Having done a similar
move a few years back, Australia is also the land of special cars from
overseas, ad being our closest neighbour, there are also cost and time savings
to be potentially had. The Australian government can be tricky to negotiate at
times, and of course there’s the matter of dealing with both the export and
import aspects, plus the local compliancing and registration, but I think there
is money to be saved and invested in the right car.
And Holden is a brand
that’s booming at the moment, so I’ve found a gold CV8 Monaro manual, listed on
Aussie selling website carsales.com.au. With less than 40,000km for the 16
year-old modern classic, its price might sound high at $95,000, but that was
actually one of the lower-priced Monaros on site, at least comparably in this
condition. And given it sold for around $60k when new, prices are rising.
With shipping from
Australia to NZ around $4000, depending on the loading/unloading aspects at
each port and the delivery methods and location of the seller and buyer, there
are also factors like import duty and GST and MPI charges, which can vary. Plus
compliancing and registration, and there won’t be a huge stash of change from
$10,000, on top of the purchase price, and of course the currency conversion.
This Monaro may be just an example, but for the right car at the right price,
Australia could also be an option.
The wild card
We love to throw in a
wild card for these 60 Second Sell pieces to give more scope to the reader
votes (or maybe just for you to show how wrong we are). This time it’s sourced
from Japan, but Italian and very red: a 1994 Lancia Delta Integrale whose
mileage matches its price: 108,000km and $108,000. How often does that happen?

https://www.driven.co.nz/news/buying-cars-from-overseas-online-hit-return-select-drive/
Buying cars from overseas online: hit Return, select
Drive.
Supply of new and
near-new vehicles in New Zealand has been severely affected by Covid-19 (and
the related semi-conductor crisis in the case of the former). And Auckland has
now experienced another two months of lockdown.
It’s a buying
environment that naturally steers customers of all kinds towards alternative
solutions as they search for the right product. Buying consumer durables online
from overseas has become second nature to NZers; so why not cars?
Many distributorships
and dealers already offer comprehensive online tools for potential buyers.
Brands like Toyota and Honda are actively encouraging new-vehicle customers to
make the internet key to their purchasing process. During NZ’s first lockdown early
last year, Turners Auctions really ramped up its used-vehicle online research
and Buy Now tools.
A company called
Autoport is stretching the online auto-buying concept even further by offering
Kiwis a portal to cars still located overseas. Customers can shop and select
vehicles from Japan or the UK online, order and have the vehicle delivered to
NZ – all facilitated by Autoport.
While that’s a huge
change from the “tyre kicking” business model once so entrenched in the NZ
market, things have changed. Autoport co-founder David Paviour says many buyers
are now just as comfortable ordering a car form overseas as they are any other
expensive product.
“It was a big step for
us, but there are people who never really purchased online and have since
discovered there’s all this interesting stuff available. There’s definitely
been a move for people to shop online as much as they can. It’s just more
comfortable for a lot of people.”
Once the car is on the
ground in NZ, there’s a five-day money-back guarantee for vehicles up to
$50,000 if the car doesn’t match the description. On non-performance models,
there’s also a 12-month mechanical breakdown policy. All cars are delivered at
an on-the-road price, registered and with a full tank of fuel.
Paviour and business
partner Hamish Lusk created one of the first internet-based selling platforms
for car dealers back in 1999. They later sold that, but kept the wholesale
side, sourcing and shipping used vehicles from Japan to NZ for dealers.
The thought process
came full circle and eventually they decided to apply that sourcing and
importation expertise back towards the consumer side of the car business.
There’s still a strong
human element. Buyers register and browse online, but there’s often a
one-to-one discussion, including overall condition and features, between
Autoport and the potential purchaser. There might be more to cover around
finance or a trade-in. When the buyer is ready, they click Buy Now on the
website and the process starts.
Wait time is about
eight weeks, although shipping schedules have been a challenge for a while now.
It’s up to two weeks in Japan to get a car inspected twice, three weeks on the
water and another couple in NZ for preparation before it can be driven away.

Why is it so hard to buy a car if you’re a woman?
Women influence 80-85
per cent of all car-buying decisions, and yet many still dislike the process.
Anecdotally, many women when asked will have a story about feeling dismissed,
patronised or ignored while car shopping with a dealer.
And you don't have to
look hard to find multiple articles reporting women describing the car buying
process as making them feel 'stressed', ' and 'overwhelmed'.
So what is it about
the car buying process that makes them feel this way?
The male-oriented
industry means car yards and dealerships can be intimidating, making women feel
like they're 'prey in a glass box'. Salespeople can aggressively target women
to make a sale, quote higher prices and assume women know less about cars than
their male counterparts. If a woman brings a man along, the seller often talks
to him instead of her. Worst-case scenario, but not unheard-of: salesmen make
suggestive, inappropriate remarks to female buyers.
It's no wonder that a
woman looking for a car expects the process to feel uncomfortable. Here are
some suggestions that can help female buyers to overcome the bias and feel more
confident about choosing their next car.
There's a wealth of
information about cars and the industry out there. Before heading out to car
yards, it's worth taking the time to research the kinds of cars you're
interested in. That's good advice for men, too.
Go deep – learn about
prices and optional extras of makes and models. Take notes, and bring them with
you when you shop. It might also be worth reading some of the car-dealer
reviews or feedback online , too, so you know what barriers you may be facing and
can prepare for them.
LET THE SALESPERSON
KNOW YOU KNOW
When you shop for a
car, bring your research, along with some in-depth questions. Indicate that you
know what you're talking about and don't be distracted by 'women-friendly'
features or special add-ons. Stick to your questions, and write down the
answers. If the seller deviates from what's already been said, you'll be able
to pick up on it easily.
KEEP YOUR FINANCES TO
YOURSELF
The dealer doesn't
need to know what your financial situation is, or how you intend to pay for
your new car. The less you reveal, the less ammunition the dealer will have to
pressure you into a sale. Don't discuss payment options, just stick to
negotiating the price.
DON'T RUSH
It's a really good
idea to take your time – unless you need a car urgently there's no reason to
close the deal immediately. The longer it takes, days or even weeks, the more
likely the price will come down, so don't rush. While you risk losing the car
to another buyer, remember that you hold the power in the negotiation. There
are probably plenty of cars that would suit you, whereas the traditional car
dealer needs to sell that specific car, so it's easier for you to walk away
from the deal.
DON'T ACCEPT
PATRONISING BEHAVIOR
If the salesperson
starts talking down to you, or trying to divert your attention to 'womanly'
aspects of a car like seat fabric, change the subject back to the important
considerations – the car's mileage, service history and age, amongst others. If
that doesn't work, ask to see another salesperson, or go straight to the
manager.
If things still don't
improve, you're within your rights to go elsewhere. First tell them why you are
halting negotiations and why they've just lost a sale – they need to know.
AVOID CAR YARDS
ALTOGETHER
While online auction
sites like Trade Me can shield you from many of these issues, there are a few
downsides. You may still find yourself interacting with dealers anyway, and
private sales don't come with the protections you can expect when buying from a
registered motor vehicle trader.
There is an
alternative. Online car buying sites like Autoport (www.autoport.nz) offer a
new way of buying cars. They present you with thousands of cars to choose from
and a far wider variety. They also take the role of importers, cutting out
middlemen's fees, which means you could get your car for as much as 20 per cent
less.
While you still end up
buying from a car dealer, you can avoid car yards entirely while still having
the protections built around the sale. For example, Autoport offers a five-day
money-back guarantee, which can essentially become a test drive. You get up to
500kms to make sure the car is what you really want. If it isn't, you can
return it in the same condition you got it, no questions asked. It is also reassuring
to know Autoport cars have also passed AA Safety Compliance standards. "We
appreciate that buying cars online is a new concept for the public – but is it
really?. At Autoport we offer all the same services as a traditional car dealer
including finance. However, unlike others we remove the risk associated with
purchasing a car by offering our 5 day money back guarantee and including a 12
month mechanical warranty" David Paviour – Autoport co-founder says.
KNOWLEDGE IS POWER -
OR YOU CAN GO ONLINE
Women haven't had it
easy in the male-dominated car-sales industry. Taking the power back is about
arming yourself with knowledge, focusing on what you want in a car, and never
forgetting that you the customer are always right.
Take advantage of the
new era in car buying with the likes of Autoport, for plenty of choice,
consumer protections, mechanical warranties, finance options, and a money-back
guarantee, without the patronising hard sell.

The new model that's shaking up the car industry
Just behind insurance brokers, real estate agents and advertising people, car salesman is the least trusted profession in Australia, according to a recent Roy Morgan's annual Image of Professions Survey. They've been at the bottom since the survey began in 1988.
While this reputation
might not always be warranted, the realities of used-car dealerships mean
buyers can often feel unduly pressured – sales people working on commission are
incentivised to get buyers driving off the car yard. This business model also
means buyers will almost certainly be paying more to cover overheads, dealer
margins – and 'on-road' costs adding to the price.
Searching online
provides an alternative but comes with its own downsides. Buyers can choose
from a larger selection of cars without navigating the hard-sell approaches of
many dealers. However, they could end up buying from a dealer (and paying those
extra margins) just the same. If you're buying privately, you may pay less, but
you'll also get less protection if the car turns out to be faulty, or
misrepresented.
There's a third option
and it's disrupting the used car market - Online car dealers. This new business
model is directly connecting buyers with cars. It gives buyers the best of both
worlds – a larger selection, much lower prices, no hard sell, and the same
guarantees and protections you'd expect from a dealer. Here's how it works:
CHOOSE FROM AMONG THOUSANDS OF OPTIONS
With online car buying
your choices are almost endless. Rather than just what's available in New
Zealand, you can tap into the huge international markets, which have thousands
of options. You aren't just limited to what New Zealand car dealers think they
can sell off the car yard quickly. Conduct a search yourself and you'll be
delivered all the information you need to make a decision.
Sites like Autoport
(www.autoport.nz) allow you to ask questions about each vehicle either online
or by picking up the phone. They also offer a search service – give them a
brief and a budget and they'll deliver some likely candidates.
CUT OUT THE MIDDLEMAN
AND SAVE UP TO 20 PER CENT
With no car yard or
stock to purchase and store, these new online car dealers can operate with
significantly lower overheads, and pass on these savings to car buyers. Sites
like Autoport claim that without the middlemen costs, they can save customers
up to 20 per cent. And Autoport's prices are all inclusive drive away prices –
there are no hidden costs like On Road Costs (ORC's).
THE PROTECTION OF DEALING WITH LICENSED PROFESSIONALS
As you would expect
there are laws and regulations that Registered Motor Vehicle Traders who must
abide by. Buying privately doesn't give you the same safeguards and means
you're not protected by the Consumer Guarantees Act to the same extent. With
Autoport you also have the reassurance all their cars have passed AA Safety
Compliance standards.
Online car buying
offers you the same safeguards as you'd find at a traditional car dealer, and
some go even further. For example, Autoport offers a 5-day money-back
guarantee, a 12-month mechanical warranty (on non modified and non performance
cars), finance if you need it. Autoport makes it easy for the buyer – they take
care of getting the car in from overseas, and manage all the foreign taxes,
GST, compliances and registration.
NO TEST DRIVE ONLINE?
YES, THERE IS
A fifteen-minute test
drive out of a used car yard isn't long enough for you to truly assess the car
you're considering. The likes of Autoport overcome this by offering a 5 day
money-back guarantee, essentially giving buyers the chance to test-drive 5
days. Return the car in the same condition within 5 day and having not
travelled more than 500km for a full refund – no questions asked.
"We appreciate
that buying cars online is a new concept for the public to get their heads
around - but is it really?. At Autoport we offer all the same services as a
traditional car dealer including Finance. However unlike others, we remove the
risk associated with purchasing a car by offering our 5 day money back
guarantee and including a 12 month mechanical warranty" David Paviour –
Autoport Co-Founder goes on to say.
THE FUTURE OF CAR
BUYING
Online car buying is a
disruptive new business model – a direct connection between buyers and
thousands of cars. By side-stepping the middlemen in the traditional model
you're getting the legal protections of buying from a car dealer, without the
extra cost.

How to take (less
of) a risk on a used car
For most people, buying a used car comes with a fair amount of risk. There's a reason why car manufacturers rarely offer warranties beyond three years – a car's complexity means that regardless of manufacturing quality, or care taken by the driver, things can and
will go wrong after a while. How wrong they'll go is the question. Many drivers find their cars last for years, with only minor repairs required, while others face huge bills after catastrophic mechanic or electrical failure, even when all signs pointed to the cars being reliable.
There is much of this
that is simply unpredictable, it's the reality of owning a used car, But there
are a few things you can do to help you avoid choosing a lemon.
1. AVOID BUYING A CAR
PRIVATELY
Unless you're a
mechanic with the skills to inspect (and repair) cars, it's wise to avoid
buying your used car from a private seller. While most private sellers aren't
trying to rip you off, it's simply that they are not Registered Motor Vehicle
Traders (RMVT). This means you have very few legal protections.
Buy privately, and you
have no recourse if you discover you were misled. In short, the risk is
entirely yours.
2. LOOK FOR A RMVT
When you buy a used
car from a Registered Motor Vehicle Trader, you're protected under the Consumer
Guarantees Act. These laws are there to minimise your risk. That means you can
have confidence you're being told the truth about the car you're buying. If the
car isn't performing the way you expected, you can take it back to the seller
to be fixed or to get a refund.
3. LOOK FOR DEALERS
WHO LOWER THE RISK EVEN MORE
In the new era of
online car buying some dealers go the extra mile to reduce risk. At Autoport, for
example, their structure means they're essentially a go-between – they're not
trying to sell you any particular car like a traditional car dealer has to.
Rather they offer a vast platform which minimises risk to users. That includes
all the protections you'd usually expect from an RMVT and you know Autoport
cars have all passed AA Safety Compliance standards.
Their cars also come
with an 12 month mechanical warranty (for non modified and non performance
cars), and the option of extending the warranty up to 48 months. That way, if
anything goes wrong with your new car, it will get seen to immediately without
question.
4. 5 DAY TEST DRIVE
All used-car sellers
will let you test drive a car before buying, but a 15 minute drive isn't the
test you might think it is. It's not long enough to really assess if the car is
right for you, but it's a perfect time for the seller to get you alone and tell
you what you want to hear. Customers are actually encouraged to test-drive for
that very reason – it's a good time to give you the hard sell.
Some dealers will let
you take the car for longer. For example, Autoport gives you a 5 day money back
guarantee. That is, in essence is a 5 day test drive. Take it anywhere –up to
500km– to be sure the car you bought is right for you. Wrong colour or a weird
smell – whatever the reason you're not happy, send the car back in the same
condition as you bought it, and you'll get a full refund.
"We understand that there is risk associated with any car purchase. At Autoport we recognise this and want to give the public total confidence in their purchase. We achieve this by offering our 5 day money back guarantee and 12 month mechanical warranty" David Paviour, Autoport co-founder went on to say.
5. JUST THE RIGHT CAR
FOR LESS RISK
Cars are big-ticket
items, and consumers need to know that their money is well spent. You won't be
able to avoid risk completely, but if you buy from a registered dealer you're
getting at least the protection of the Consumer Guarantees Act. Buy privately and
you're on your own.
Even less risky in the
new era of car buying is dealing with an online car dealer like Autoport. Quite
apart from the huge number of cars to choose from, you'll also save 10-20 per
cent off normal retail prices plus get a 12 month mechanical warranty. You also
have a chance to test drive your new vehicle not just for 15 minutes, but for 5
days. That way, you know it's the car for you.
