Step-by-step Buying Guide

Thanks for considering Autoport to buy your next car. It's important you know what we do. So lets get into it.

We are not an ordinary car dealership! All cars listed on are located in Japan or the UK. We manage everything so what you see is what you get.

You can tell which country on the listing description that shows the car is located in Japan or the UK at one of our authorised suppliers.

The displayed price includes everything - there's nothing more to pay to drive away. All your consumer rights are covered, plus some more.

When you want to buy a car we:

  • make sure it is available. Occasionally a car is sold overnight and the supplier hasn't updated our system, but this is rare.
  • make sure it is good quality. If we believe the car is bad quality (has been in an accident or has too much wear and tear) and could cause problems, we'll contact you to discuss options.
  • don't want you to worry as we'll always keep you informed. If there is an issue to work through, we'll always do our best and there are usually other options.
  • check it's Electronic Stability Control (ESC) status. If the engine size is more than 2,000cc then it MUST have ESC. From 1st March 2020, ALL cars imported MUST have ESC.
  • check it's airbag status. Due to the faulty Takata airbag issue, all affected cars MUST have had their airbags replaced. We make sure this has happened.

Signing up to Autoport is easy but we need to make sure of your details! Simply click HERE to create a new account. For your email and mobile we will instantly email/text a verification code for you to enter. This is for security reasons as you don’t want people buying cars with your details.

You can always find your next car and save it to your watchlist without entering the codes, but you will need to complete these steps to buy.


Browse through the thousands of cars displayed from dealers in Japan and the UK. You can either do a standard search for a specific make and model from the HOME page, or a more detailed search using our SMARTER SEARCH.

Ask Questions

Found a car you like? Don’t be shy to ask the seller questions using our Ask Question function at the bottom of each car page! It’s important that you’re comfortable with the car so ask anything and everything. For Japanese sellers, your questions will be translated before they receive them, as will their answers to you. We’ll follow up with the seller and get you an answer ASAP.

You’ve found the car of your dreams, but how much do you need to pay? You can click the Buy Now button, and as long as the car is still available we will do our best to buy the car at that price. We will let you know what the outcome is.


Please read the Terms & Conditions and agree to them. You will be entering into a legally binding contract to buy your next car. Once that is done we will confirm the car’s availability and confirm the purchase. We will contact you as soon as we get confirmation from the seller.

Pay Deposit

While it’s always best to come up with a deposit, we can offer 0% deposit if you put your finance through us. We manage this through a personal loan and then a car loan. We will lay it out so it’s easy to review and understand. If you want 0% deposit, please come and see us prior to buying a car as we’ll need to get the finance sorted out first. When that’s done or you have already organised the deposit amount, you can go shopping. Once you’ve bought the car you’ll receive confirmation from us that the car is available and ready to go! We will send you an invoice for 100% of the car and all costs to get it here and for it to be legally driven on NZ roads (includes car cost, inspection, shipping, FX, customs clearance, GST, compliance, 12 months registration and valet). As mentioned above you will need to pay up front a deposit which will usually be 10% (can be lower or higher depending on the car and finance if applicable) of the invoice. We accept VISA and MasterCard and bank transfer (or a mix of the both) for the deposit, which must be paid within 24 hours of receiving the invoice.


Once we have confirmed receipt of your deposit, the car is transported to the nearest port in its country of origin, where it is inspected and then booked to be shipped on the next available vessel to Auckland. You are notified every step of the way so you are always kept in the loop!

Pay Balance

Your car has arrived, been customs cleared, complied with a 1 year WOF, so now it’s time to pay the remaining balance of the invoice. This can only be paid by bank transfer in cleared funds (or directly from the finance company) and must be paid within 24 hours of us notifying you the balance is now payable. At this stage we cannot accept credit card payments for the balance of the invoice.


Once we have confirmed that the balance has been received, we register the car in your name and arrange new number plates assigned by VTNZ staff.


Time to make the car sparkling clean! This is the last step before you pick the car up.


You can collect your car at a date/time pre-arranged with us from our base at Ellerslie Racecourse. Or, if you prefer, we can deliver for just $75. At the moment that’s limited to Auckland metro district – that’s 30kms from CDB excludes RD addresses and islands. Delivery can happen between the hours of 10:00am and 3:30pm Monday to Friday. We will meet you and give you a proper hand-over of your car. If you would like us to transport it to you, let us know where and we’ll work out a great price.
